Would anyone be interested in herbal extracts?
« on: April 05, 2013, 12:34:57 PM »
I'm thinking about making a few extracts to sell to you guys/gals. I'm going to start experimenting with a few ideas I have for products. I'm not allowed to advertise but I'll tell you this: I'll tell you all the ingredients over PM. Also, I'm thinking about having products for insomnia, anxiety and energy/alertness; all of them will be all natural. All orders would be custom made since I wouldn't be making a lot of these (lack of time/money). I can tweak the recipe if you want me to remove something from the mix. guaranteed friendly service and discreet shipping. I ship things in bubble mailers w/DCN. I superglue the package shut for extra security, they likely won't notice it because it's not on any visible part of the package, unlike tape that looks suspicious.

anyone interested? I'm not sure about prices and probably can't post them without admin approval anyway but I'll do some experimenting and post prices then (after admin approval).

You don't need any security at all if these are not illegal or controlled herbs.  Just make sure the packaging can take being dropped from ten feet, can withstand having an 80 pound box sit on top of it, and make sure it wont break when the air pressure is cycled to 75% atmospheric and back to sea level several times.

If they are controlled or regulated materials, please be very careful to understand the situation and possible consequences.

I would second Ngls advice, and offer a solid 'maybe' from a consumer standpoint.

Key for the product's success would be fx level.  I think you know what level of fx our demographic is accustomed to.  This can be tough to achieve with extracts - many have tried to break "the natty code" with varying degrees of success.  If you can manage fx between 'noticeable' and 'pronounced', it'll probably fly.

Best of luck! :steamroller

Nope, I won't be using any chems or controlled substances.
Also, nobody has had much success with smoking mixtures, I'll be making caps. Not for human consumption of course :P if someone were to misuse them they'd probably eat them.

I've got a lot of experimenting to do though. I won't have any products ready to sell for a while.

Dashneo,

What is your experience with making extracts? Who would you be sourcing the herbs from? This makes a huge difference.

Very high quality extracts are readily available already. The shear volume of base herbs to make 1 liter of extract is huge.
You will need a small warehouse that is temperature controlled to even begin to do this endeavor, and at least an initial investment of $50-$100k
That is for space and the beginnings of a shop.  Then you need test equipment that will need to be professionally calibrated for extracts.
This is all before you buy any solvents or herbs,or extraction Vats. Not to mention oil mats, and collectors.

Since this is going to be "for human consumption" you will need at least a 5 million dollar liability insurance policy and make the business an LLC
so no one can sue you for personal property.

If you think you can do this at home, you're gonna have a bad time.

The people that tend to use extracts already have good sources so you will need a solid marketing plan as well.

All true enough.  Look at the example of Tripple Xtracts.  Off to a great start with seemingly the world at their fingertips, and then the whole thing more or less falls apart for various reasons, including competition, sprinkles, sources and herb supplies demand exceeding supply, poor customer service, etc.   It is a major undertaking to try to hang in there along side the established vendors and the Chinese.    I am surprised anyone stays in business doing that sort of thing.  OK, Burnman does it for the spirit of the common good, but it is just like any other business, you have to be able to compete.

You could probably do it as a hobby but it will be frustrating and there will be times when you have way more in inventory then you have sales--commodity manufacturing and sales are like that.  So, maybe there is something to be said for continuing your research and finding the elusive natty blend that works --and then make it & sell it in bulk or at wholesale to an establised distributor like LHS or one of the herbal shops (Bouncing Bear, etc).

It takes about 4 or 5 years for a big pharma company to break even on a new drug because of all the R&D and testing that needs to be undertaken before something is released, that's just the way it goes.  If you really want to break into the herbal market, do your research and look for a niche that isn't being filled or is being filled inadequately, then get your money and industry together to fill the niche.  Alternately, go make some money now and put it away, and then when there is a recession or the DEA is making trouble again just make an offer to buy an establised seller/distributor business and you will be in the biz!  Why not?

it wouldn't be that professional to be honest. I'd be in it to sell to a few people I know.
