Cannabis General / Marijuana Users Less Likely to Experience Severe Covid Infections

A new study has potentially good news for marijuana users as we head into peak Covid season. People who use cannabis were found to be less likely to experience serious illness and even death.

The study, which was conducted by Northwell Health in New York and published last week in the Cannabis and Cannabinoid Research medical journal, found that cannabis users had better outcomes and mortality compared with non-users. The researchers believe that the beneficial effect of the drug use may be attributed to its immuno-modulatory effects, which helps the body fight off infection and disease.

In coming up with the findings, the team analyzed Covid patient data from the National Inpatient Sample Database and then divided the patients into two groups based on cannabis use. A total of 322,214 patients were included in the study, with 2,603 being cannabis users. User and non-users were then matched to adjust for factors such as age, race, gender, and other comorbidities. Cannabis users also tended to be younger and had a higher prevalence of tobacco use.

According to Forbes, 28.2 percent of cannabis users were found to have experienced serious infection, compared to a near double 46.6 percent of non-users. The mortality rate was likewise just 2.8 percent for users and 5.1 for non-users, with intubation rates at 7.1 percent and 9.7 percent, respectively. Cannabis users also had shorter hospital stays of 6.4 days compared to 7.0 days for non-users.

"On initial analysis, cannabis users had significantly lower rates of severe COVID-19 infection, intubation, ARDS, acute respiratory failure, severe sepsis with multiorgan failure, mortality, and shorter length of hospital stay," the study's authors write. "After 1:1 matching, cannabis use was associated with lower rates of severe Covid-19 infection, intubation, ARDS, acute respiratory failure, severe sepsis with multiorgan failure, mortality, and shorter length of hospital stay."

This is not the first study that has linked marijuana use to Covid outcomes. In 2022, researchers at Oregon State University published a study that found certain cannabinoids, as in the naturally occurring biological compounds found in cannabis, prevented the virus from entering human cells. The cannabinoid acids, which are commonly found in hemp varietals of cannabis, had the ability to bind to the spike protein of the virus and neutralize it.

When officers of the state Department of Cannabis Control swooped in on a neighborhood in the Bay Area city of Antioch this spring, they found what they were looking for — about $1 million in illegal marijuana — and one surprise.

One of the three houses they raided was owned by an officer of the Oakland Police Department.

In an email, the department confirmed that it "is aware of the allegations made against one of our members and is cooperating with outside law enforcement agencies on the case."

The officer was placed on administrative leave April 30, and the matter is under investigation, the statement said.

Citing an ongoing personnel matter, the Police Department declined to name the officer.

CNN, which first reported the raid, identified the officer as Samson Liu, 38.

Real estate records show that a Samson Liu purchased a 2,800-square-foot house in Antioch in 2020 for $608,000.

The raid highlights the extent of illegal pot operations and the recent entry of Chinese organized crime into the industry that California voters legalized in 2016, the cannabis control agency told the news outlet.

The department did not immediately respond Tuesday to The Times' request for comment.

The majority of homes raided in Antioch were owned or occupied by people with Chinese names, CNN reported based on search warrant affidavits, online property records and interviews with neighbors.

A Los Angeles Times investigation based on confidential state records, public files, online sales and social networks found that in the last three years, the use of contraband Chinese pesticides on cannabis farms has spread across California.

Chinese-labeled pesticides have shown up now in at least six California counties, at both illegal and licensed growing operations. The poisons were present on half of 25 illegal farms in Siskiyou County raided by a state task force during a July 2023 sting operation that saw three officers require medical treatment after suffering exposure.

In a continuing investigation, The Times found chemicals tied to cancer, liver failure, thyroid disease and genetic and neurologic harm in marijuana sold in licensed dispensaries.

prices will eventually drop. I bought a few ounces at Dayton Ohio dispensary a couple years ago for $50 each on a special.

Betcha right after the sale the old stuff gets tossed in the trash--that's when the homeless people get it for free!

After you pay, you'll notice that the printed label on your purchase has your name on it, and you are the "custodian" of that sack. Rise is the only OH dispensary near me; very pricey.
North of the state line, if you are specific about what you want to spend and know your strains, you can get 2 oz. for about a hundred bucks. The wife gave up her license for scanning, but not me. I also have a cousin that works at one of the dispensaries a few miles north of me.

Not to leave out they scan your drivers license and everything you buy, how much you buy, and when and where you buy it is in multiple databases. If the law ever changes they have a criminal list at their finger tips  :jay:
