Is it bad that I don't call my parents on there birthday or mother/farther day?

   Lets say Your Dad was like Mr Garrison's dad on SouthPark and You were upset cause he had refused to sexually molester you as a child.
            Then I would say No, it's probably best if You don't call him on Fathers Day, cause that might make You unhappy


   I quit calling my Dad on Father's Day because I usually feel guilty for not getting him a gift. Thing is I don't really think he wants anything, but still...

I didn't get to do anything special for father's day, but I took my son to play with friends all day.

He had a lot of fun, that's what counts.

Guess it depends on your relationship with them. I do because it's a nice gesture that doesn't really hurt me at all, but at the same I don't necessarily judge others who don't do it. I don't have a strong relationship with my parents because, as tough as it is to say, they weren't the best at raising emotionally healthy children. My dad was really passive, like pushover passive, and was generally content with mentally checking out in front of the TV. Never spoke up during house disagreements, or when we got in trouble, so my mom had to take both roles which I'm sure stressed her out.

However, I know now he tried to do the best he could with the best tools he had at the time. When I was younger it really ticked me off that I didn't have any sort of a male role model, but then again kids tend to think of parents as these larger than life figures when at the end of the day are just normal humans who have also been influenced by how they are raised. The older Ive gotten I've felt more pity for him than anything, as his mom was very critical and even worse, was a teacher in school and even had a class with her. Can't imagine the social pressures from other kids in that situation.

So I made sure to call him and had lunch. I think hes depressed because he probably knows he could've done much more as a parent, but I know now it wasn't with bad intentions or his fault. Of course some people do have truly  horrible parents though so by no means saying that everyone absolutely should call their dad.

Recently I have been going to local sports games with him and its one of the few times where he seems to really enjoy, so I'm glad we can share a little time doing something that we both enjoy. I know if I ever needed help he would absolutely do whatever he could, so I appreciate that!
